Waving buh bye to all the misconceptions about Down Syndrome! MISCONCEPTION: people with Down Syndrome suffer. BUH-BYE! Definitely not. Have you seen my child? A recent study* found that 99% of people with DS are happy with their lives MISCONCEPTION: siblings of a child with Down Syndrome will be negatively impacted BUH-BYE! Ha! Again, have you seen my girls together? Because of Millie, Georgi is learning compassion, patience, understanding and acceptance of all disabilities. MISCONCEPTION: People with DS can’t go to regular schools BUH-BYE! They can and they do! Inclusion in schools not only benefits the children with disabilities but also the typically developing children. MISCONCEPTION: having a baby with Down Syndrome is rare BUH-BYE! DS is the most common chromosomal condition. About 6000 babies are born with DS in the US every year (about 1 and 700) and with nearly a 70% termination rate, that number could/should be higher. MISCONCEPTION: all babies with DS have a congenital heart defect BUH-BYE! It IS true that babies with DS have a higher rate of facing heart problems than typically developing children but only about 50% of babies with DS are born with a heart defect. Some may never need surgery and if they do, the survival/success rate is extremely high!
