Now for the DIL, I felt overwhelmed the moment she started listing the questions about the venue but then my chest cramped when she came up with the spa day idea after her son told her she’s overwhelmed. And I’m not pregnant! Okay now to the scripts: 🗣️ Son - “Mom, thank you again for throwing us this baby shower, we both really appreciate you. The planning is getting to Kelly, so her and I will sit down come up with a plan and shoot you a text this weekend. That way you don’t have to stress, and Kelly can relax, for her and the baby’s sake.” 🗣️ My script for mother-in-law: “You have the biggest heart. I can see you love through actions and your family is VERY lucky. Since it seems like the planning might be a lot on your DIL, I’d come up with a couple package ideas, give them a deadline and then tell them if I don’t hear back by X date we’ll go with one of the packages. That way you’re gift lands the way it should rather than feeling like pressure.” 💡 Stuff like this may seem small but ruptures can start off with the kindest of intentions and all of a sudden the pressure and stress can turn into resentment, avoidance, and unfortunately breakdowns. I hope this helps and this story was shared for educational and reflective purposes only. This MIL is NOT a villain. If anything she’s trying too hard. Maybe she’s worried she’ll be left behind after the baby, IDK. But if she could take a breath, get some reassurance that they want her to be apart of the baby’s life, that she isn’t going anywhere.
