Did you know that Judy Mowatt and Freddie McGregor had a daughter together? Some stories in reggae history are not only about music, they are about creativity, love, family and two artists finding each other during an important chapter in Jamaican music. In the late 1970s,Judy Mowatt was already an internationally respected voice as one-third of the legendary I-Threes alongside Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths.Together their harmonies became an essential part of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ sound during some of Marley’s most celebrated years. At the same time,Freddie McGregor was establishing himself as a powerful singer, musician, arranger and producer within Jamaica’s reggae scene. Their paths crossed during this highly creative period, including work connected to Judy’s landmark album Black Woman, released in 1979. The album was groundbreaking. It explored themes of womanhood, empowerment, spirituality and Rastafari consciousness, and Judy’s role as a producer was particularly significant in an era when women were still fighting for greater recognition behind the scenes in Jamaican music. Freddie McGregor was also involved musically during this period, and their professional relationship reportedly developed into a romantic relationship. From that relationship came their daughter, Yashemabeth McGregor, born in 1980. Their lives and careers later took different directions. Freddie went on to become one of Jamaica’s most respected reggae veterans, delivering classics such as “Big Ship” and “Push Come to Shove”, while expanding his work as a producer and supporting the development of other reggae artists. Judy Mowatt continued making music and later embraced gospel but her legacy as one of reggae’s pioneering women remains firmly established. From the I-Threes to Black Woman,Judy Mowatt helped open doors for women in reggae and left an important mark on the culture. #reggae #rootsreggae #reggaeton #reggaemusic #reggaevibes
