If you get extreme anxiety from physical touch and have a hard time explaining it to others, I have an explanation that might help. Research has found that sensory sensitive brains re-route physical sensory inputs to the area of the brain that processes pain. If you get extreme anxiety from physical touch and have a hard time explaining it to others, I have an explanation that might help. Research has found that sensory sensitive brains re-route physical sensory inputs to the area of the brain that processes pain. (Link below) Before I get into the details, I want to mention that the study was conducted on autistic children because a significant feature of autism is extreme sensitivity to sensory inputs... But since sensory sensitivities are not exclusive to autism, it's my belief that this research is likely relevant to anyone with extreme sensory sensitivities. So, back to the study... the researchers referred to this extreme sensory reaction as "tactile defensiveness." Here are some examples of what tactile defensiveness can look like... - A person pulling back when someone tries to touch or hug them - Extreme distress when trying on new clothes - An aversion to tooth brushing, hair washing, hair brushing - Wearing long sleeves and pants to avoid things touching the skin What I find especially interesting about tactile defensiveness is that it's not about harsh or extreme sensory inputs. The extreme reactions happen when the physical input is soft and gentle. So someone with tactile defensiveness might get extreme anxiety when they're touched or kissed gently or when something lightly brushes up against them. (*cough* me) Now, back to the pain part I mentioned earlier... According to the research, in these brains, abnormal patterns of white matter growth re-route sensory inputs to the area of the brain that processes pain. So when a person's tactile defensiveness is triggered, the internal reaction they experience is the brain wanting to protect the body from what it instinctively feels is dangerous. It's about survival. It's also not within a person's control. And no amount of logic will change the internal response. It's automatic. So what can you do if you experience this? Give yourself grace. It's not your fault, and it's OK that you have these needs. Express them. Advocate for yourself. Half the battle is people understanding this about you. And if you have a loved one who experiences this... don't take it personally if they don't want to be touched a certain way. This has nothing to do with you or how they feel about you. I promise. ❤️
