Just last week, when Raquel Krähenbühl of TV Globo and Globo News asked US Senator Marco Rubio of Florida if he would joined the Trump administration as Secretary of State, he didn’t want to comment. But according to the New York Times, President-elect Donald Trump is now expected to name Rubio as his top diplomat. Trump could still change his mind at the last minute, but appeared to have settled on Senator Rubio, whom he also considered when choosing his running mate this year. Rubio would arguably be the most hawkish option on Trump’s shortlist, and he has in years past advocated for a muscular foreign policy with respect to America’s geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba. “I’m not on Russia’s side — but unfortunately the reality of it is that the way the war in Ukraine is going to end is with a negotiated settlement,” Rubio said in September about Ukraine. When it comes to tech and innovation, Rubio, who’s the Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, is adamant about stopping China’s economic expansion. “Today, it is a force to be reckoned with in the industries that will define the 21st century,” he said earlier this year. “The bottom line is that U.S. policymakers cannot afford to be complacent about the largest, most advanced adversary America has ever faced. That was true in 2015, and it will be even truer in 2025. To prevent China from eclipsing the United States entirely in the decade that follows, we need an industrial policy of our own.” Rubio has also been critical about US Big Tech companies and their role in amplifying disinformation. #marcorubio #digitaldiplomacy
