I’m the PBIS chair and I’m not bought in. Kids should act right b/c that’s what they should do—not to get a prize. I hate it.

If they go feral when u haven’t rewarded them, is it really changing the behaviors (or just teaching them to expect rewards for “the bare minimum”?)

I watched the WORST behaved 4th grader go to the “monthly party” while average students did not get to go. He got tickets for behaving for 2 seconds.

My current problem with this system is the students will just throw in the towel and say they don’t care and bully the ones being praised.

Like all things, pbis would work if there was more support at school. But everyone is already running around with a million things to do, so there’s

It is a Psychological concept. It will work if used consistently and properly. The problem is teachers are busy and it’s hard to implement.

PBIS is definitely not “ignoring the bad and praising the good” and being framed as such is a big reason why it’s failing

PBIS in theory should work, but it's intensive on the teacher and the IS parts never happen. It's the one committee I have said straight up "no" to.

We always use 3:1 behavioral narration- I see Billy doing X, I see Sue doing X, that whole table is doing X. Sarah, can you do X?

THAT'S👏 NOT👏 HOW👏 PBIS👏 WORKS👏. Too many admins lying to teachers abt it. It works in conjunction w behavioral expectations & consequences.

As a fellow teacher in Ohio, I don't like how pbis systems are now required in our schools by the state. There is lots of research on rewards harming intrinsic motivation, which I see far too often in our schools.

They’re kids. We need to stop expecting them to just do things. We as adults should be teaching them even when it’s a “normal” everyday thing.

I don’t like the idea of having to reward students for doing what is expected. When I go to work and do what needs done, do I get paid extra?

That’s actually not what the core of PBIS is. But like with so many programs, it’s implemented as a “great idea” systemically before it is fully 1/2

PBIS is a tiered system of support. Involves layers of behavioral interventions. Differentiation!!! Rewards are only a fraction when done right.

I agree with rewarding the proper behavior. However, it can be more dangerous to ignore the bad behavior. I tried in my class as did many others 1/2

I think it depends on what the 'bad' behavior is. Especially if the district won't back up teachers and hold parents responsible for their children.

PBIS emphasizes consequences too, they are just correlated and most see this as passive because the consequences are not detention.

My beef with PBIS is that we begin to provide contrived reinforcers for behaviors that are already occurring under naturally occurring reinforcers (praise, grades). In a way, it’s a pivot backwards
