I watched the WORST behaved 4th grader go to the “monthly party” while average students did not get to go. He got tickets for behaving for 2 seconds.

It is a Psychological concept. It will work if used consistently and properly. The problem is teachers are busy and it’s hard to implement.

PBIS in theory should work, but it's intensive on the teacher and the IS parts never happen. It's the one committee I have said straight up "no" to.

We always use 3:1 behavioral narration- I see Billy doing X, I see Sue doing X, that whole table is doing X. Sarah, can you do X?

As a fellow teacher in Ohio, I don't like how pbis systems are now required in our schools by the state. There is lots of research on rewards harming intrinsic motivation, which I see far too often in our schools.

I think it depends on what the 'bad' behavior is. Especially if the district won't back up teachers and hold parents responsible for their children.

I try to give whole group rewards. This way kids who usually do the right thing get rewarded and kids who need extra reminders still earn rewards.

My beef with PBIS is that we begin to provide contrived reinforcers for behaviors that are already occurring under naturally occurring reinforcers (praise, grades). In a way, it’s a pivot backwards
