The trifecta of hEDS, POTS and MCAS has been widely observed by clinicians who specialize in treating these issues. Each of them can certainly occur on it’s own or you may have a combo of two of them and not the third but it should typically prompt a knowledgeable provider to consider whether the others are present when a patient presents with one of these. The most simple way to describe what these are would be by saying bending, dizzy, and itchy. That is, of course, a huge oversimplification, but it’s kind of a summary. hEDS is about much more than simply being bendy, it’s a connective tissue disorder, but that is one of the hallmark signs of it (hypermobility). POTS is about much more than being dizzy, it’s a form of dysautonomia, and is marked by a jump in heart rate when standing. MCAS is about more than being itchy, it’s a condition of the mast cells where they release chemicals abnormally. It’s sort like an allergic response but it can be unpredictable and the cause isn’t always clear. There can be a lot of crossover in these conditions as well and sometimes it can be very difficult to tease out which condition is responsible for which symptoms. GI symptoms, for example, may be cause by the looser connective tissues (hEDS), or by mast cell reactions (mast cells are in the GI tract), or by the abnormally functioning autonomic nervous system (dysautonomia) which controls our digestion. It can become complicated when someone has more than one of these conditions. Zooming out and seeing it all as being under the same umbrella, however, can be a relief sometimes. It’s not uncommon for someone to have all these “mysterious” and “unrelated” symptoms but then to later find out they are all intertwined and connected. It’s easy to get stuck in a game of trying to find out exactly which things are at play and unfortunately finding specialists in any of these three areas can be challenging. The good news is that with all three there are many lifestyle factors which are affordable, safe, non-invasive and which can yield massive improvements in how a person feels and functions no matter what the official diagnosis is. In other words… do not let your search for answers/diagnosis prevent you from taking action in the areas you can and will benefit from right now! This is exactly what we teach in our hypermobility program. Message me to learn more!
