My grandmother had a story where she was walking to her car after work one night and grabbed her hat pin out of her bag. She got to her car and realized the pin had fallen out of the head and she was just holding a ceramic ball!

Not just Edwardian women. Hat pins were used well into the 1960s. I was very young but I used them with my hats.
