As we age, there are moments when we can no longer do the things we used to. This is not exclusive to the disabled community. As someone with a physical disability, these moments can be more sudden or more severe. Every day, I battle some degree of pain, spasticity, muscle weakness, functional loss. For the most part, my bad days have turned into better days. Knowing that this will not always be true takes a huge mental toll. I try my best to live in the moment and take things day by day. On the hard days, on the days when it feels like my body doesn’t want to push forward, my brain tends to focus on all of the unknowns that come with a disability and the fragility of my my future. I’ve had a challenging last month with my spinal cord injury and there have been more days of frustration, fear, and pain than not.
