This powerful targeted release works into the small muscles at the base of the skull and that tight band a lot of people hold tension in without even realising. Trigger points in this area can refer pain into the head, behind the eyes, and around the temples, which is why this area is often involved in tension headaches and neck tension. Put your fingertips slightly under the base of the skull and slowly turn the head from left to right, focusing on any tight or tender areas. This can be a deceptively powerful technique, so go gently. For the best results, I'd usually combine this with techniques that also release the SCMs, upper traps, and front of the neck, alongside some neck mobilisations and stretches to help balance out the whole area.
