Restorative circles also should not *replace* consequences.

Counselor tried a restorative circle w/ me & student who hated me. It was 30 min of variations on “Teacher’s a jerk and I won’t do anything he says.”

Thank you! I’ve never understood these for most kids. You can’t force mediation to fit a narrative your school is promoting.

It’s not working for 2 reasons. 1. The school is a punitive place-these circles aren’t true to the experience there. The kids know they’re fake

I am required to have a "circle" in my classroom every week...I teach Pre-K. make it make sense. 🤷🏼♀️

Same reason couples counseling only works if both are committed to change and save relationships. Maybe we can get rid of "snitch" calling earlier?

YES. I think students see restorative practices as a way to avoid getting what they think are actual consequences. They have a chat and say what they think the adults want to hear, and that’s it. So they think they just got away with it.

We are supposed to do these, with an entire class daily. Yet, Admin reminded us that we aren’t counselors….. so…
