Who wants a breakdown?! I mean comedically, not emotionally for once in my life. This one starts with me sort of shoe horning some existing material into my crowd work… there’s a front row with a lot of sisters in it and I use that to move into a bit I have on middle children. Some comics are always looking for a route into a pre-existing bit in their crowd work and it’s a real feat of memory and material variety to be able to do a show like that. It’s not my favoured method because a) I have a terrible memory for my own old bits of material and b) I prefer reacting genuinely in the moment not trying to engineer us to a place I have already selected. When I mention The Sound of Music the women in the front row look at me blankly and then I end up on a riff about wars. To me, this is my favourite bit because, while it’s not perfectly articulated by any stretch - there’s the beginnings of a properly thought out bit in here. A bit on how wars are taught in the English education system? Why we learn about 1&2 and then “skirmishes”. There are not so clear beat points for the audience to laugh at here because I don’t know clearly where to leave them when I’m riffing. Also, it’s less safe ground than sibling rivalry so you feel the laugh rhythm change. My response is not to panic or backtrack on my bit but to use the uncomfortable moment to start talking to someone new. When he turns out to be American and that provokes a big room reaction it’s the perfect summation to the bit I’d just done. I’ve always found Americans to be very, very good sports in an audience and he’s no exception in this clip. We have an easy baddie all of a sudden. This one little 2 minute clip shows 3 different routes into crowd work: material weaving, riffing on a topic in monologue, and finally finding a hot button topic for “panto” reaction.
