@onlycrits: This is probably an overreaction. Does anyone not allow multiple damage types? Maybe I’m just paranoid. #dnd #onlycrits #dnd5e

Longswords historically did Slashing, Stabbing, and Bludgeoning damage, the last one referring to using the pommel at the end of the hilt

The halberd, has both a spear point, and an axe blade, why does it only do slashing damage?

This was the case in older editions but they wanted to “simplify” 5e. 😂

it's common sense surely that what you do determines the damage not the stats, you can pierce with a slashing weapon, or bludgeon

because 5e is an extremely dumbed down rule set. i would highly suggest looking at/trying out pathfinder 2e, its a great intermediate system!

Even if the enemy has slash res but not pierce res, you could say like "yeah you can try to do piercing damage just gotta roll idk +2 their AC" if they're worried about it being "broken" (which makes sense if it's like an armour thing or if enemy is covering their weaknesses)

Pathfinder 2E has this. Older Editions had this. 5E, like Skyrim, is an ocean with the depth of a puddle. Both of them need mods to get more depth.

Example: Chainmail prevents slashing damage, but can be pierced/stabbed through. so a monster that can't be slashed could/should be stabbable.

play Pathfinder 2e, a few weapons have this built in where you csn do piercing or slashing if it's a sword.

You're welcome to stab with a longsword, but there's not much point changing the damage type as that won't matter except in very few cases.

Could be like in Morrowind, where weapons have 3 damage values: stabbing, slashing and chopping; with different weapons having a different spread (axes deal more chopping than stabbing, spears do mostly stabbing, etc...)
