Alexis Ohanian announced that he recently had thyroid surgery due to cancer concerns. Thyroid nodules are common and most of them are benign (not cancerous). However, -10-15 percent of nodules are cancerous -there are several types of thyroid cancer but the most common is papillary thyroid cancer Symptoms of Thyroid Nodules -lump or swelling in front of neck -difficulty swallowing -change in voice -difficulty breathing -pain in front of neck VERY IMPORTANT: Oftentimes, there are NO symptoms present and nodules are found incidentally. For example, an X-ray such as an ultrasound of the carotid arteries that can incidentally pick up thyroid nodules or a neck X-ray after a car accident shows nodules or a chest X-ray picks up nodules. Incidental pick up IS THE MOST COMMON reason I see patients. So often people never know that they have thyroid nodules because there are no symptoms or symptoms are thought to be because of something else. Risk factors that a nodule will be cancerous: 1. Radiation treatments to the head and neck 2. Family history 3. Extremes of age, i.e., young or elderly Diagnosis: 1. History and Physical Exam 2. Ultrasound of thyroid If ultrasound finds nodules, SIZE and CHARACTERISTICS matter. If nodules are over a certain size (1.5cm) or have specific features, then a biopsy is needed. 10-15% of the time, the biopsy will show thyroid cancer. If cancer is found, surgery to remove the thyroid is needed. If suspicious cells are found, additional biopsies, genetic testing, or surgery is needed. If biopsy is negative, nodules need to be followed with repeat ultrasounds or the thyroid can be removed depending on the severity of symptoms. See an ENT doctor immediately if there is concern about a lump in the front or sides of the neck. SAVE AND SHARE!
