I am NOT a good piano player and we don’t have an accompanist. Still a high scoring program! I manage with finale accompaniments and LOTS of solfège:)

Non-pianist here. Between using vocal modeling, and utilizing technology, I manage pretty well at the MS level. BUT I do not recommend. Go practice!

I can play 2-3 parts at a time, and warm-ups. Technology has been my friend and I get by pretty well. But I've grown even more since I started

And if your piano skills are bad bad, get trained in Kodaly methodology— no piano necessary. I agree that piano skills are helpful, but not required!

My choir teacher played for us during rehearsals and we had someone’s mom accompany us (she was paid and awesome and had like 18287381 kids who all did choir at my hs)

I think things are much easier if you play, but my skills are severely lacking and we do just fine. I have hella good readers, though!

High school choir teacher here who sucks at piano! I struggle with putting it all together, but having to play every day forces me to get better.

Just need to know enough to go through a rehearsal and play parts! Chords help too! Fake it until you make it!

How common is it for students to be accompanists (esp. high school)? My senior year I was the accompanist for my middle and high school choirs

In my opinion, you need to know how to play to teach any kind of vocal class. You can’t be a vocal teacher without it

Yep. In my district, I accompany the high school choirs and that teacher accompanies my middle school. But only in concerts. I can't imagine doing my job without my piano skills.
