They essentially throw their pistons at 180 degrees as opposed to 90. But what are the advantages of this crankshaft design? The flat plane crank is also said to provide better engine balance and smoother power delivery. Another advantage is that it allows for a higher redline. and the flatplane is what gives the engine the unique V12 esq sound. When you hear a flat plane crank engine, you can immediately tell it apart from regular V8.
