@plantedinthegarden: Grow food without breaking the bank. Hydroponics isn’t just for indoor gardening it belongs outdoors too. By turning a cheap 5-gallon bucket into a Kratky hydroponic system. You can grow food in water without buying soil, no gnats or bugs to deal with. No need to keep watering, and you can make your own nutrients direct from your compost. You can grow many vegetables in water. The way this bucket system works is that you fill it with nutrient mix and water and as the water level drops, air space is created which provides oxygen to the root. If you’re growing leafy greens, the nutrients should last from seedling to harvest. It’s a one-time set up. If you’re growing tomatoes and peppers, you will eventually need to top with water or replace with new nutrient water mix. If growing outdoors, then it won’t cost you electricity and you can use free natural sunlight. It doesn’t cost much to set this up indoors either, using an energy efficient indoor grow lights will cost between $5-8 a month. You can grow up to 40+ vegetables with a single light. Nutrient Mix (For hydroponic and soil use) Worm Casting or Finished Compost: 2 shovels full Starch water: Either from rice wash, or boiled potato water which feeds microorganism during fermentation. Seaweed (optional): Dried seaweed 6oz per gallon of water Epsom salt (optional): 5 tbsp per gallon of water Tools: 5 gallon bucket: Food grade buckets can be purchased from your local hardware store Hole saw or a cutting blade to make holes Net pots or nursery pots will do. I use ones with 3” diameter #gardeninghacks #gardentok #gardening101 #diyproject #hydroponics #gardening #fy #DoTheSmartThings
