When the short vowel u sound comes before the /v/ sound, the letter o does the job of that sound. English words try to avoid the uv pattern. This goes back to scribes. It was too difficult to read so they changed the u to an o (scribal o). The letter f used to produce both sounds /f/ and /v/. Both sounds are produced with the same mouth placement. One is voiced and the other is unvoiced. When the two sounds became two separate letters, the spelling became the letter f but held the /v/ sound. (English words can not end in the letter v). Knowing this helps with words like love, above, shove, etc! ••••I have a word study “word wall” resource that has this along with other words broken down and coded with the sounds with movement!
