ONTARIO DRIVERS WARNED: $110 FINE NEAR GORDIE HOWE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING MISTAKE October 15, 2026 | Windsor, Ontario Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning motorists about a dangerous driving mistake near the newly opened Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan. 64 WRONG-WAY DRIVING INCIDENTS REPORTED SINCE JULY! According to police, 64 incidents involving motorists driving the wrong way on Highway 401 near the bridge have been recorded since the crossing opened on July 27, 2026. Some drivers approaching the bridge realize too late that they are heading toward the United States. Instead of continuing safely, they attempt dangerous manoeuvres to avoid crossing the international border. THE $110 FINE Police warn that driving the wrong way or reversing on a highway can result in fines starting at $110 CAD. More importantly, these manoeuvres could cause serious or fatal collisions. WHAT DRIVERS SHOULD KNOW: 1. Take Exit 1 — Ojibway Parkway: If you do not intend to enter the United States, leave Highway 401 at this exit. 2. Do not reverse: Never back up on the highway after missing your exit. 3. Do not make a U-turn: Turning around against traffic can cause a serious collision. 4. Continue toward the toll booths: If you accidentally miss your exit, proceed safely to the bridge toll area. 5. Ask for assistance: Explain your mistake to a Bridging North America employee. Staff can direct you through an exit gate without requiring you to approach border customs. WATCH YOUR SPEED! Police are also reminding motorists that speed limits decrease as they approach the bridge. • At Exit 5, near Huron Church Road: 80 km/h. • Near Exit 1: 50 km/h. IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION The $110 penalty is not an automatic fine for accidentally approaching the bridge or missing an exit. It applies to prohibited driving manoeuvres such as travelling the wrong way or reversing on a highway. WHY THIS MATTERS The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a major new Canada–U.S. border crossing. Drivers unfamiliar with the route should review directions before travelling. THE BIG QUESTION: Should Ontario install additional warning signs before the final exit to help prevent these dangerous mistakes?
