Not all joists have strapping. Lots of houses have drywall mounted directly on joists.

unless furred, no space between drywall ceiling and joist. Can't run perpendicular to joists without drilling through joists. am I wrong?

I've never seen strapping 😂 I always have to drill holes in the joists and make hole in the drywall every other joist

I just had to do this when taking down a non load bearing wall. One room had no lights. Snakes under joists. Easy peasy lemon squeezie

dude 9 out of 10 times sheetrock is attached directly to the joist or truss. with no gap between sheetrock and joist.
