are you any good with tile? Plywood backing, patterned white/light marble tiles (use caulk/glue to affix the tile and then grout as usual).

Omg, use thin plywood and then some sort of tile, maybe even a good quality peel and stick that looks like marble, cheap and easy to install

I love it. You could fur out the wall, place the fireplace on that and tile around the iron piece. I could see a very dark green or burgundy surround

Have you seen the laser cut fence panels? They have a design similar to the door that you can attach to the back of the mantle
