In July 2000, Air France Flight 4590, an iconic supersonic Concorde, was taking off from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, bound for New York. As the sleek, needle-nosed jet accelerated down the runway at over 200 mph, its landing gear ran over a small, 17-inch strip of titanium that had fallen off a DC-10 that had departed just minutes earlier. The rogue piece of metal violently shredded one of the Concorde's tires. A massive, 10-pound chunk of high-speed rubber was propelled upward, smashing into the underside of the left wing with the explosive force of an artillery shell. The impact didn't physically pierce the wing, but it created a massive internal shockwave that burst the number five fuel tank from the inside out. Hundreds of gallons of jet fuel began pouring out and instantly ignited, likely sparked by severed electrical wiring in the landing gear bay. The Concorde lifted off the runway trailing a massive, terrifying plume of fire. Because of the heavy damage and engine failures, the pilots were unable to retract the landing gear or gain sufficient speed and altitude. The doomed airliner struggled through the air for barely a minute before rolling sharply to the left and crashing into a hotel in the nearby town of Gonesse, killing all 109 people on board and four people on the ground. This horrific, highly publicized disaster shattered the Concorde's spotless safety record and myth of invincibility. It immediately grounded the entire supersonic fleet. While engineers eventually retrofitted the remaining aircraft with newly invented burst-resistant tires and Kevlar-lined fuel tanks, the crash—combined with the massive global aviation downturn following September 11—ultimately forced the permanent retirement of the Concorde in 2003, tragically marking the end of the commercial supersonic passenger era. #ConcordeCrash #AirFrance4590 #AirCrashInvestigation #AviationHistory #SupersonicFlight
