I thought using a wheelchair meant I had to settle in love. But in reality, before I ever got paralyzed, I struggled with self-love. I looked for validation in all the wrong places. I let attention feel like worth. I let men make me feel chosen, even when I wasn’t being respected. And I know somebody in the comments will probably try to reduce that down to some kind of name calling… I already know who I was. I’m not hiding from her. Because the truth is, before my injury, I didn’t love myself well. And after I got paralyzed? That didn’t magically get better. It actually got worse. I went from having no self-love…to really having no confidence. I truly believed because of what happened to me, I wasn’t deserving of a relationship that felt happy, safe, fulfilling, and real. So I let men use me. Until eventually, I decided it was just easier to be alone. For a while, it was. Being alone felt safer than being with someone who made me question my worth. Then I met him. And he completely changed the way I saw love. Not because our relationship is perfect. It’s not. (There are days I want to choke him out because let’s be real…he’s still a man. 😂) But this man is my best friend. He makes sure I’m safe. He makes sure I’m okay. He makes me laugh in ways I didn’t know I needed. And one of my favorite parts of our relationship is how honest we are with each other. If I’m feeling insecure, we talk about it. If he isn’t creating safety for me, we talk about it. If I’m not creating peace for him, we talk about it. We don’t let things sit and rot. We communicate. We tell the truth. We grow through it. And I need to say this part because it matters… This relationship didn’t just fall into my lap by accident. During my single season, I made it my focus to become the quality of partner I wanted to attract. I WORKED ON ME. Personal development. Self-love. Fitness. Nutrition. Mindset. Emotional control. Taking better care of my body, my mind, and my life. I stopped obsessing over finding the right person and started becoming someone who could actually hold the kind of love I was praying for. We still spent almost a year building a friendship. Getting to know each other. Learning each other. Building trust before we built a relationship. And I’m so grateful we did. Foundation in a relationship matters. The greatest thing this relationship has taught me is this: I was right not to settle. I was right to believe I still had a lot to offer as a partner. I was right to believe that using a wheelchair didn’t make me less worthy of being loved well. The thing I used to think limited my dating pool actually protected me from the people who were never meant for me. And I’m grateful for that now. So if you’re reading this and you think your circumstances make you harder to love… THEY DO NOT. They reveal who isn’t capable of loving you well. That’s not rejection. That’s PROTECTION. Your life can look different than you imagined and still be full of love, safety, laughter, friendship, and the kind of relationship that makes you better. Don’t settle because you think your circumstances make you less. Do the work. Become the person who can hold the love you want. And then wait for the one who sees all of you and chooses you anyway. #lovr
