there are different kinds of RR spikes straight track and corner track. corner track spikes are actually a higher carbon then straight track

A tomahawk that is for throwing does not need to be super hard because it doesn’t have to hold superfine edge like a chopping axe at least in my experience

old hat trick but the plates the tracks sit on is made of a really nice hardening steel and makes good blade inserts for junk spikes steel

The HC, or “highER carbon”, stamped spikes do. Just not as hard as say 5160 or 80crv. Still good steel.

Won’t pass ABS test standards. RR spikes are designed to bend, not break. Still makes for good knives though.

railroads use2 types of spikes. there are some cheaper spikes used for temporary service. look for the spikes with an "HC" on the head for hardeneding

most spikes can hard decently, but it'll be like 1045, best case. not a bad steel, but on the low end for a solid axe, and not a great knife steel.
