I never knew how to maximize my power to its full potential. Now that I’ve learned the mechanics behind a proper high velocity throw and how mine poorly stacks up against said mechanics — I’m making it my mission to throw HARDER and consistently ACCURATE. Here is what I’m working on. These issues, suggested corrections, and the first drill were brought to my attention by @jenschro. The following is my translation and personal corrections I’d like to make. Compare my past videos (or this video) to your throws to see if these problems and solutions resonate with you. 1. Legs: My legs are the strongest part of my body, yet I’m not using them. I need to push off the inner part of my back foot to propel me forward. It’s easy to compare throwing to hitting — power is in your legs. When you hit, you load your weight into that back leg to thrust momentum forward (in a sense.) When I throw, my momentum is going straight up. I always thought about digging my forward foot into the ground and throwing over the top of that stabilized leg as if it acted as an anchor. Because of this, I have to rely strictly on my arm strength. 2. Hips/Core/Chest: I fall off of my throw, veering to the left. This habit not only makes my throw tail in unwanted ways, but it puts A LOT of pressure on my shoulder (learn from my mistakes, my arm hurts after 15+ years of playing) To correct this, I need to keep my chest closed and wait LONGER to rotate around my front hip. Another issue in this department is bringing my glove into my chest instead of pulling my chest toward my glove🔑 3. Arm: I’ve been mistaking the feeling of getting scap loaded with counter-rotating my top half. Similar to spinning off while hitting. I’m over-rotating, needing to open up my chest to clear a path for my arm to come through. The final issue is my lack of layback - aka my external rotation sucks. This limits my arc of motion, meaning I lose force when throwing a softball, which equals not throwing as hard. All these mechanical issues are intertwined as the body flows in sequences as a whole unit. Join me in my journey to fixing my janky throw and increasing my OH throwing velocity. #softball #catcher #baseball #catching #catcherswag #softballgirls #training
