I know the vent/diffuser would most likely cover a mistake but I always run the holesaw in reverse in siding to start

You should start the drill in reverse on vinyl. If that blade was dull, you'd tear out the siding.

Start the saw in reverse to get it through the siding, then go put it forward. It will never damage it that way.
