A landlord spat James Watt's beer back in his face. That reaction is the reason the beer belonged in supermarkets rather than pubs. Later, when every bank refused to fund the growth, he sold shares to the drinkers instead, and 200,000 of them put in £75 million. Those were the people who had gone looking for the beer in the first place. By 2017 BrewDog was valued at £1 billion, part-owned by the 200,000 people who had been buying it all along.
