@history.unlimited: The Oscar-nominated French film "Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas)" released in 2005 is based on a real incident during the early days of World War I. On Christmas Eve 1914, the soldiers fighting in the front line trenches near Lens, France, staged a spontaneous truce. The peace was not ordered from senior command at either HQ. In this scene, German Army private but famed opera singer Nikolaus Sprink sings "Silent Night" for the men of his unit and for all the soldiers along the front line.
