If you watch my stories, you’ll know last week we welcomed six new souls to the farm, when the eggs Pear had craftily hid away in a secret summer nest hatched. The best part was none of the eggs belonged to her - four were from Plum, and two were Periwinkle’s, but she found them and claimed them as her own. All six hatched without issue, and she left the nest to take her brood to water. And this is where the story gets really funny, because at some point between when I discovered the nest at about four days into incubation and the following week, the girls laid more eggs nearby, which Pear pulled in. Because I was trying to disturb her as little as possible, I was only checking the nest when I’d happen to catch her off it, so imagine my surprise when one day, there were nine eggs instead of six, and a quick candling told me they were about a week behind the first ones. And if you’re doing the math in this story, you’ve already gotten to the punchline, which is that once Pear left the nest with her initial brood of six, I had three eggs with a week left on the clock. One had died during incubation, but the other two were alive and well, so into the incubator they went, and besides these adorable six outside, duckling number 7 is sitting in my lap just born yesterday, and duckling number 8 is just beginning its hatch! Now the big question - do I build a second duck house, or build onto the Quack Shack and turn it into a Quackdominium?
