In 1984, Elisabeth Fritzl, then 18, was taken by her father, Josef Fritzl, to a hidden, soundproof cellar beneath their family home in Amstetten, Austria. For 24 years, she was held in this concealed basement without the outside world's knowledge. Josef manipulated the situation by misleading his wife and the community, claiming that Elisabeth had willingly left home. During her captivity, Elisabeth bore seven children, three of whom lived with her in confinement, while the others were brought up by Josef and his wife upstairs, under the pretense that they were foundlings left by Elisabeth. The situation came to light in 2008 when one of the children, who had never seen a doctor, became critically ill, and Josef consented to hospital treatment. The medical staff's suspicions prompted a police investigation, which eventually led to the discovery of Elisabeth and her children in the cellar. Josef Fritzl was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including deprivation of liberty and grievous assault. In 2009, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Elisabeth and her children were given new identities and have since been under state care, receiving support to help them rebuild their lives after the traumatic ordeal.
