He’s so smart. 🌱 Beehive ginger, or “shampoo ginger” is a plant species in the ginger family, and it’s native to Southeast Asia. It uses the word ‘behave’ because the flowers resemble a beehive! The plant grows to a height of about 2-3 feet and has large leaves that are glossy green and grow on the cone-shaped plant. Beehive ginger is most often grown as an ornamental plant for its attractive flowers, but it’s apparently also used as a shampoo replacement! It doesn’t lather like regular shampoo, it’s more oily, but it’s best used when it is fresh because without storing it properly, it goes to waste pretty quickly. Gotta be careful though because a lot of people may be allergic to the ‘goo,’ which just makes your skin itch. You’re not supposed to press the flower too much because apparently the limpid ones are the better quality ones. Contrary to what we most would believe ;). It is propagated by dividing the rhizomes, also known as the underground stems, of the plant. Just remember though, that behave ginger is not the same as regular ginger, its just part of the same family, so they’re basically cousins. Beehive ginger, on the other hand, is grown primarily for its flowers and is not typically used in cooking or for most medicinal purposes. Cool stuff! #howtowithjessie - @growithjessie
