The only reason that new pan doesn’t get sanded is labor cost. Smoother surface will clean easier

my lodge pan was not smooth when I got it. After almost 20 years of regular use it is smooth as a new non stick pan now

I have 2 lodge pans I was gifted. one I sanded and the other I didn't. the sanded held its seasoning longer at first but now they are about the same.

I've done both.. sanding simply reduces the time it takes to get that smooth bottom. I use the chain mail pad. I got tired of buying steel wool.

Texture has 0 effect on the nonstick property of a true season, so aesthetics is the only reason to sand

I've sanded cast iron pans sooo smooth that the seasoning layers are very fragile for months!!

Why do they make it rough anyway? My bacon sticks to it.

How can I season a cast iron skillet without an oven?

The old pans actually had a finer casting medium
it cost more to do
so it got bean counted away

maybe get a new one and sand it and then do a comparison? antique, new and unsanded, and then new and sanded?

agreed, spend a little on som BSR. super reasonable and fantastic vintage smooth cookware. picked up a 4 piece set restored on ebay for about 150.

Just pay a little more and get a Field if you want smooth and not hassle with searching or sanding

Don’t sand it. Just use it and make mistakes. Mistakes so bad you have to use steel wool to clean it. Won’t take long and will be smooth!Problemsolved

My pan is all sorts of stick despite seasoning it and oiling it after every use. Doesn't help that I'm using it on a glass top. It has terrible heat distribution.

Use it enough and use it right, and it'll be smooth soon enough 🥰. I used my papaw's today for gravy. He's been gone 23 years and had it lord knows how long before he passed. It's well loved, and smooth 🥰

the unsanded texture holds seasoning really well initially. it takes me a lot more effort to get the smooth ones ready for use
