you can also use your utility knife to lightly score the box if you don't have a box resizer tool.

A tracing tool from a sewing store works the same and is cheaper than the resizing tool.

my shipping boxes are A.always reused B.look hideously altered to accommodate the item. I could spend 20 mins looking for a right box or 4 altering

You can do that with the box knife, you don’t need the tool. Just don’t cut all the way through the box.
