when I was in scouts I was told snow is mostly air so not a good source of water. ice is the better option for water in winter conditions.

You could keep a container of snow in the cabin realistically and it would melt slowly for a few days. Again though, only realistic in an emergency

In a survival situation I usually just drill a well down to about 1k ft below the surface. Then pump and filter it from there.

It takes 10-12 inches of snow to make an inch of rain. Forsure not easy.
