@africanaustralian: Audio recordings taken at the Brisbane city police watch house reveal officers joking about beating and burying black people, referring to Nigerians as “jigab👀s”, and raising fears that Australia “will be f#ck!ng taken over”. A series of tapes, leaked to Guardian Australia by a whistleblower, record several Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers using racist slurs and offensive language while working in the holding cells. Including against Indians and Indigenous Australians. Days later, the Guardian revealed that Kerry Johnson, the QLD’s police head for its First Nations Unit, that deals with Aboriginal Australians, is now under investigation for alleged racism. Out of over 300 commissioner officers in QPS, not a single one of them identifies as indigenous, clearly outlining a lack of Aboriginal representation in the police. In October, the second top officer in the QPS was also accused of using racialised language against elderly leaders of the State’s indigenous communities. In July 2021 there was another scandal, in which over 1,000 Queensland police officers (and police officers from other states) were exposed as belonging to a Facebook group called ‘Defend the Blue’, where routine racist and sexist comments were made, prompting public calls to address the culture of the State police. These are just some of the incidents where police from across the country were embroiled in racist activity. Yet not one officer has lost their job as a result. And laws have not changed to get tougher on racist police to protect citizens. Racist police kill, they destroy lives, they routinely bully and harass black and brown law abiding citizens. Queensland just introduced "tougher on crime" laws, which is great. This was after a British woman was recently killed in a home invasion. Hundreds of Australian citizens protested for justice and equality across the country, but other than regrets and apologies there has been no tangible action taken to protect citizens - #BlackLivesMatter too . . #africanaustralian #blm #policeaccountability #racistpolice #queensland #victoria #westernaustralia #tasmania #newsouthwales #northernterritory #southaustralia
