At just 21 years old, Marine Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter made a split-second decision that nearly killed him but saved the life of the Marine beside him. On November 21, 2010, Carpenter and his friend Lance Cpl. Nicholas Eufrazio were defending a rooftop position in Marjah, Afghanistan, when an enemy grenade landed inside their sandbagged position. Carpenter moved toward it. The grenade exploded beneath him, with his body absorbing most of the blast that otherwise could have killed Eufrazio. Carpenter’s injuries were devastating. He lost his right eye, most of his teeth and part of his lower jaw. His right arm was broken in more than 30 places, and he suffered severe injuries throughout his face and body. During treatment, his heart stopped three separate times. Doctors brought him back each time. He spent five weeks in a coma and more than two and a half years recovering through nearly 40 surgeries, including brain surgery. Eufrazio also survived despite suffering a severe traumatic brain injury. Four years after the explosion, Carpenter stood at the White House as President Barack Obama placed the Medal of Honor around his neck. At 24, he became the youngest living recipient of the nation’s highest military award for valor at the time. He survived something doctors said he shouldn’t have survived, all because in one split second, he chose to put himself between a grenade and his friend.
