there are different clips for different purposes. the straight ones are for the ends. you need to go deeper

I could be wrong but Ive seen people bend the pig tails and they snap lower than where you cut them. Give it a try if it works you wont have cut ends

You don't have to cut the ends off. Just bend them and they are meant to break below the surface.
