@fashioningtheself: Sonya Clark's repurposing of found objects and textiles is both ingenious and politically relevant. Key to her artistic practice is rethinking the value of symbols from the pre-Civil Rights South, such as the Confederate flag. In this work "Unraveled Persistence," the weft of a woven nylon Confederate flag has been removed, stripping this enduring racist symbol of its potency. Though the flag is made translucent, its image endures, like a ghost haunting our collective imaginations. Clark created this work in 2016 after the white supremacist Dylann Roof killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina. Creating "Unraveled Persistence" was Clark's way of processing the trauma of actual and symbolic acts of racial violence perpetuated in the United States. #blackart #africanamericanhistory
