Amsterdam just became the first capital city in the world to ban all meat advertising in public spaces. Since May 1st, 2026, no billboard, bus stop, tram station, or digital screen in Amsterdam can display an advert for beef, chicken, pork, or fish. Fast food burgers, chicken nuggets, processed meat — gone from every public surface in the city. The ban was approved by 27 of 45 council members. Amsterdam isn't the first Dutch city to do this. Haarlem banned meat adverts in 2022. Utrecht, The Hague, Delft, Nijmegen, and seven other municipalities followed. Amsterdam is just the first capital. A court in The Hague upheld the ban against legal challenges in 2025. Dutch meat consumption fell to a record low the same year. The WHO classifies processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen — same category as tobacco. Tobacco adverts were banned decades ago. Now meat joins them. Meanwhile in America, fast food companies spend over $5 billion a year on advertising — marketing products containing veterinary antibiotics, petroleum dyes, hidden trans fats, and preservatives linked to cancer directly to children. Amsterdam looked at the science and pulled the ads. The US looked at the science and kept selling. Scanned on the Exposr app
