@nmaahc ・・・ , Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia. King became one of the most prolific leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement and one of the most influential historical figures in American history. Born into a ministerial family, King attended segregated public schools in Georgia before attending Morehouse College. He went on to study theology and completed his doctorate at Boston University, where he met his future wife and key partner in activism, Coretta Scott. After marrying in 1953, they moved to Montgomery, AL and he became pastor at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. In December 1955, King was selected by a group of local activists to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and in 1957, he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). King’s philosophy of nonviolent protest and provocation centered around ending the “The Triple Evils: Poverty, Racism, and Militarism,” which he asserted were “interrelated, all-inclusive, and stand as barriers to our living in the beloved community.” King’s protests led to him being jailed 29 times for charges like civil disobedience. In 1963, he was a member of the leadership group organizing the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. An estimated 250,000 people journeyed to the nation’s capital and heard him deliver his famous “l Have a Dream” speech. King was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963, and at the age of 35, became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. His efforts helped turn a global spotlight on the inequality, injustice, unequal citizenship and violence faced by African Americans, and led to laws enforced by Congress to advance Black American civil rights, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory 📸 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Baltimore, MD.
