President Biden announced he is commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500 people and pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. It marks the largest single-day act of clemency in history, surpassing President Obama, who granted 330 commutations shortly before leaving office in 2017. The commutations are for people who served out home confinement for at least a year after they were released from prison during the COVID pandemic. “America was built on the promise of possibility and second chances,” President Biden said in a statement Thursday. “As President, I have the great privilege of extending mercy to people who have demonstrated remorse and rehabilitation, restoring opportunity for Americans to participate in daily life and contribute to their communities, and taking steps to remove sentencing disparities for non-violent offenders, especially those convicted of drug offenses.” The president said he would take more steps in his final weeks in office. “My Administration will continue reviewing clemency petitions to advance equal justice under the law, promote public safety, support rehabilitation and reentry, and provide meaningful second chances,” he said. President Biden issued a sweeping pardon of his son Hunter earlier this month, clearing him of federal gun and tax charges just before he was set to be sentenced. He is also said to be considering issuing preemptive pardons for those who investigated efforts to overturn the 2020 election and might face retribution when President-elect Trump returns to the White House next month.
