The divisive rhetoric of each of the major parties may myopically help either poll better, but all it creates in the long run are deepens rifts between friends, families and communities that don’t heal easily. We need to get back to a place where we can work together despite our differences in order to collaborate on solutions that seek to create a better world for all of us, not just those at the top. After all, we all live in these towns together, shop at the same stores, eat at the same restaurants, and at the end of the day, we have to be able to get along and come together, because the only way we’re ever going to get through the hardest of times, is together. If you as a voter feel limited in your options and the values you’re able to express, or feel coerced into voting for a party that you don’t actually align with just to stick it to another party you disagree with more, or if you feel so unrepresented, ignored and cast aside by the major parties that you don’t even bother to vote at all, then I’m sorry to say…that is not a functioning democracy. A true democracy empowers people to vote for the things they care about instead of against the things they don’t, one where peoples values and views are taking into consideration and represented in the variety of options available instead of being limited to picking the better of two horrible options. As we head into these final days of voting here, I’d like to encourage all of you to think differently about what kind of world you want to create, and think hard about where your vote goes. Instead of voting AGAINST something, vote FOR something, vote for what aligns best with you. Instead of voting out of apathy against one party, or total fear of another, vote for what you truly care about.
