Gel doesn’t damage hair, slicking it back does. I had the same problem but once I limited my ponytails and got trims every 8 weeks it went away

I don’t think it’s the gel though. If you put your hair in a slick back in general your curls will loosen

Make sure your vitamin levels such as iron and vitamin D too. Those can do curl pattern changes in that area too.
