She sold a printed booklet at every show. It claimed her sailor father tattooed her as a child on the American frontier, died in an Indian raid in 1879, and that the hostile natives who captured her released her because they were fascinated by her tattoos. Her father was a shoemaker. She grew up in a Philadelphia alley apartment. Every word of the story was invented. The fabrication was the industry standard. A woman who chose to get tattooed and display her body on stage in 1882 was socially condemned. If she was captured and victimized, audiences could look at her without judging her for choosing to show it. Woodward debuted weeks after Nora Hildebrandt at the same venue. Research does not conclusively establish who was first. What is documented is the New York Times review, the two decade career across America and Europe, the 1889 Barnum European tour, the 1904 Russia trip, and the 35 wax museums she was immortalized in. She earned up to $200 a week at peak. The average working man earned $9. She died October 9, 1915, in Philadelphia. A newspaper attributed her cancer to the poison of her tattoo ink. It did not cause her cancer. Sources: Amelia Klem Osterud, The Tattooed Lady (2014); Tattoo Archive, Winston-Salem; New York Times, 1882; Woodward’s promotional booklet, 1886. #tattoo #History
