We had these growing up. They were never fragile though. The new ones probably are made with inferior materials. I liked rocking in them as a child.

It’s cause they’re cheap—or cheaply made. My mom has a caned rocker that’s over 100 years old that she used every day and the caning is still TIGHT.

we had them as kitchen table chairs in the 70s! the newer ones are made with sub-par materials.
