The breathing pattern seems to be a rather bigger topic to some. But it actually is not, there are other things which are much more important to a freestyle technique than that, trust me. Anyway, the most common breathing pattern in freestyle swimming is to breathe every 2nd stroke which is followed by breathing every 3rd and 4th stroke. And when taking a look at the best swimmers in the world as an example. Let’s look at Men’s 1500-meter freestyle final, 2012 London Olympics. Only one swimmer of the final eight used 3-count breathing. Seven swimmers used 2-count breathing. This can also be seen for shorter distances with pro swimmers. Technically speaking, 3-count breathing is the more efficient of the three breathing patterns because the head remains in a streamlined position longer, reducing drag so 3-count breathing must be good, right? Well, firstly you need to be able to sustain it thoughout practice and competitions and also it needs to fit into your overall freestyle technique. If it does not and somehow it does not feel natural when swimming freestyle the efficiency gained with breathing every 3rd time is obsolete! So a 2-count breathing pattern is perfectly acceptable and in general do what feels most natural for you! I do think it is important to learn how to breathe every 2nd and every 3rd time and every now and then to train it but the majority of times (95%) you should stick to your designated breathing pattern! Now, more important topics than the breathing pattern are other fields of a freestyle technique are breathing itself, equal body rotation, high elbow catch, kicking and how you train. Hope that helps! #breathinginswimming #freestyleswimming #freestyletechnique #swimming #ironmantri #triathlon #swim #traithlontraining
