okay, so tear down ENTIRE wall, locate stud, set box, re-drywall, mud n tape etc, add in switch, paint and go? got it.

The idea of a plate over the wall was to keep the wall clean, putting it in the wall, will make the wall dirty. It looks good now, but not later.😏

too much work for something I wont be able to feel/find in the dark. the simplicity of the switch sticking out is a benefit.
