this is bad advice. yes match the speeds and look for a gap BUT ultimately you have to give way to traffic already on the road and be prepared to stop

I found the other day the slip road was actually that short I barely got up to 35-40mph and ran out of slip road.

I wish so bad I learnt this in lessons. the duals near me don't have slip roads so I'm having to figure this out myself on motorways 😩
