South Africa-born Elon Musk has become one of the biggest critics of illegal immigration in the U.S., yet the billionaire himself worked illegally in the country in the 1990s, the Washington Post revealed. Musk, now 53, entered the U.S. on a student visa for Stanford in 1995 but withdrew just two days into the semester, which should have required his immediate departure, according to the Post. Instead, he stayed as an illegal immigrant to launch his first company, Zip2—a situation he describes as a "gray area." Foreign students are not permitted to drop out of school and create companies while maintaining their visa status, according to Former Justice Department Immigration Litigator, Leon Fresco. 'If you do anything that helps to facilitate revenue creation, such as design code or try to make sales in furtherance of revenue creation, then you’re in trouble,' he told The Washington Post. When Mohr Daidow Ventures offered Musk and his company $3 million in 1996, one of the rules of the agreement was that Musk had to obtain legal working status within 45 days or the money wouldn't come. In a 2005 email to Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard and JB Straubel, which was obtained by The Post, Musk admitted that he wasn't actually authorized to work in the U.S. at the time. ‘Actually, I didn’t really care much for the degree, but I had no money for a lab and no legal right to stay in the country, so that seemed like a good way to solve both issues,’ he wrote. Now, the Tesla and SpaceX founder is a major critic of the U.S. border crisis and has recently slammed the Biden administration for turning a blind eye to the soaring immigration rates at the U.S.-Mexico border. #musk #elonmusk #trump #immigration #election2024
