With Senate Republicans poised to block consideration of a $118 billion national security package that includes the bipartisan border security bill as well as funding to Ukraine and Israel, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he would present an alternative bill that strips out the border provisions. “First, Republicans said they would only do Ukraine and Israel humanitarian aid with border. Then, they said they would not do it with border. Well, we’re going to give them both options,” he told reporters ahead the vote Wednesday. “We’ll take either one. We just hope they can come to yes on something.” Republicans, who have grown increasingly opposed to sending additional support to Ukraine, demanded late last year that they would only consider giving more funding to the country if it was paired with a border security bill. After months of bipartisan negotiations led by Sens. James Lankford (R-OK), Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), the text of the border bill was unveiled on Sunday, but by that point, House Republicans had already come out against the legislative effort. Senate Republicans, who had largely been supportive of the bipartisan talks, then turned against the bill after it became clear there was no chance of it passing in the House. Sen. Schumer said if that vote fails — which it is expected to on Wednesday afternoon — he will call another vote on a $95 billion national security package that strips out all the border provisions except the FEND Off Fentanyl Act. The new bill provides $60 billion in military support for Ukraine, $14.1 billion in security assistance to Israel, $9.2 billion in humanitarian aid to Palestinians and Ukrainians, $4.8 billion for the Indo-Pacific, and $2.4 billion for U.S. military operations in the Red Sea. It’s unclear how a vote on that bill will go. #chuckschumer #senate #ukrainewar #gazawar #bordersecurity #cspan
